So I have noticed since update that when running caverns that there will be one sand trap in map that will be bugged (namely the one in Konzite's Domain right before the boss area). When active it will grab any in the area and whip them around causing so much damage that it can kill you even with dev pet if you aren't spamming pots and the only way you can escape it is to leave the map entirely.
