Malison for pet.
Skill build:
2/5 fire: Stun
3/5 Lightning: 250% crit, more damage
4/5 Arcane: Absorb damage upgrades
1/5 Heal
As for gear, perhaps devourer gear.
I'd go with gear that says "4 STR, 11 Int" (example) because mage is already low on health. Wouldnt choose a 4 DEX, 11 INT gear by any means.
Highest int ring and amulet u can find
Shadow musket that has a STR and INT on it.
Mages are squishy to begin with. Dont charge in if in teams. Dont expect to do amazing either. Unless boosted, youll have a moderate KDR.
Dont join ET either, all of them boost and gang when killed.
(Im not part of a guild, this isnt biased)
I dont know what guilds do guild wars, but those are most appealing to most at the level 10 bracket.

4/5 curse ... Don't do the extra two seconds...
4/5 shield... Don't do the push back...
2/5 lifegiver... Do mana upgrade...
2/5 lightning... With 15% increased dmg... At a low level, crit is rare...
3/5 ice... With DoT upgrade and the additional stun/slow the enemy upgrade...
And like Burtz mentioned... Use int/str items only, except it's very, very hard to find an amulet with int/str stats.

I always had good success with light(dmg &crit), ice, heal(mana), shield(extended & 2sec) with ribbit and one point left for passive int or dot on ice.
