You only are required to downgrade when either your party or opposing party has a clear advantage because of top shelf arcane items. Pets do not count.
For example: Parf was using an Arcane Ring so in order to balance out the playing field, he switched his helm to a level 36 Tarlok Helm which basically nullified the stat increase from the ring. You are only asked to downgrade when necessary. Most of the time both times are pretty balanced in terms of gear.
Buuuuut, I was a troll and switched towards the end. Sera called me out on it when I started going on a killing rampage, LOL! xD
