Depends on what you think is the best for you. I use heal, clock, lightning, wind and i upgrade 6 int 1 str, 6 int one str...

There are several good guides in the forums to address this. Some of the basics you will fine I have listed below:

Always go pure int.

Skills:
Fireball
Ice
Time
Lighting

Most including me now suggest buying potions and forgoe heal as it draws agro and isn't that great vs potions.

Passives:
Go 5/5 on Int, Str, Dex and Crit. Do not even bother with passive DMG now as was recently announced that only the highest %dmg increase is applied. In short if you use any pets like ethyl, colton, shadowkurk, scorch etc... Their %dmg buff negates the 5/5 %dmg passive.

Best pets for mages give crit, int, %dmg boost and health boost. Pets that give the most combinations of these are best for mages. As I have said many of times ethyl is one the cheapest pets but I would rate it in the top 5 best pets for a mage.
