If you're a low level, both of those pets are good but if you're a high level, Gyrm is probably for you but if you're a low level ripmaw is great

Ripmaw is only decent until maybe 26 tops. By decent I mean I would still use almost any other pet over him at those levels.

For the other question, Damage reduction is a difficult thing to test. I don't know if anyone has actually tried to figure this out, but I doubt it.

Damage reduction works on ur primary weapons(bow, blades, guns etc). Skills do random damage. Its difficult to test them.
