What's the exact error you're getting, and where?

One way around "Unknown Error 18" is. Go to Settings-SD card & phone storage, and click Unmount SD card wait until it does then update. After update Mount the SD card again in settings.

Error -18 means there's a bad temp file on your sdcard from a partial installation.

There are a couple ways to deal with this:

    1) Work around the problem: Uninstall, unmount your sdcard, install, then remount it and move it to the sdcard (if you want it to be on the sdcard).
    2) Fix the problem: Find the .android_secure directory on the sdcard and remove the 'smdl2tmp1.asec' file. You can either do this by mounting the sdcard on a computer, or with a file manager app.

Thank you for the more technical explanation I always wondered why it did that for certain apps, never bothered to look into it just knew unmounting SD card worked lol.

I have also found that when you encounter odd errors updating apps to move that app to the phone, update it them move it back to sd seems to fix it.
