It was actually a French watchmaker, Robert Hubert, who claimed he was an agent of the Pope and had started the Great Fire in Westminster. He later changed his story to say that he had started the fire at the bakery in Pudding Lane. The truth was not really clear if it was really started in Westminster or in a bakery at Pudding Lane.
*Sigh*

Chapter: "Aftermath":
"An example of the urge to identify scapegoats for the fire is the acceptance of the confession of a simple-minded French watchmaker, Robert Hubert, who claimed he was an agent of the Pope and had started the Great Fire in Westminster.[56] He later changed his story to say that he had started the fire at the bakery in Pudding Lane. Hubert was convicted, despite some misgivings about his fitness to plead, and hanged at Tyburn on 28 September 1666. After his death, it became apparent that he had been on board a ship in the North Sea, and had not arrived in London until two days after the fire started.[57] These allegations that Catholics had started the fire were exploited as powerful political propaganda by opponents of pro-Catholic Charles II's court, mostly during the Popish Plot and the exclusion crisis later in his reign."

Coal, I'm interested to know if you've read Connie Willis Oxford time travel series and Ellis Peters Brother Cadfael detective series. Not being a history buff, I like them for their period details but I'm wondering what you might think of them; do you like them for the details as well or loathe them for being inaccurate.
By the way, shoutout and many thanks to supporters of #TeamDurian! Wasn't expecting such a nice turnout, to be honest, so thanks a bunch!
I haven't read any Connie Willis but I have read all (or nearly all) of the Brother Cadfael novels. I am very pleased to say that not only are they entertaining they are very well researched also. In fact Ellis Peters' real name was Edith Pargeter, under which she wrote novels based on actual historical events.
Also, in the late '90s ITV adapted a number of Cadfeals for the small screen (although you may know this already).
If Arlor is to have a president, then it will become a republic, as prophesied by the posters behind the Windmoor and Kraag tavern doors (take a look). Down with the successors of King Dude!
Nordr and Glintstone must be outside this jurisdiction as they have their own kings. Tindrin, Ursume and perhaps the Kraken Isles, also appear to be independent nations.
However, as it seems that the president will be elected by the votes of fewer than a hundred Arlorians, this would actually make Arlor an oligarchy.
