Guide: How to use elixirs effectively in a group
There has been a significant increase in the number of people using elixirs.
However, there have been too many people wasting elixirs. Painful to watch at times.
To begin with, what is your goal? Your goal is to get as many group kills, farm the boss as many times, and to get as much xp as possible (unless you are a level cap player) during the duration of the elixir. In other words, you want the most bang for buck. Everyone needs a tier 3 guild hall for this to work.
So, what to do? These 10 steps need good coordination and should ideally be done with people you trust, but the rewards are quite substantial:
1. Ideally, ask your friends and use the guild-wide chat. See if anybody wants to do a 30 minute (use 2x combo) or 60 minute run (4x combo). 3x 30 minutes is a poor value. Try to get 4 or 5 people for this.
2. Hopefully you won't have to do this. I recommend that you consider abandoning your group elixir plan if this happens. If you can't find available people, you can go into town and ask people if they are willing to do an elixir run. I am reluctant to advise this because you can't always trust strangers.
3. Everyone needs to go to their guild halls and buy their elixirs. It is important that everybody purchases elixirs of the same duration. Also, decide on a host and the password for your game. Everybody in the run needs to be on the host's friend's list (if they aren't there already). Liquidate your inventory and do this with 500 items.
4. One person makes. Everyone must join immediately. Ideally, you'll want people to join within 1-2 seconds.
5. Go through the run.
6. As soon as the boss is finished, leave at once. Host leaves first, then everyone follows. Leave right away, don't waste elixir time.
7. Rinse and repeat. It is important to keep everybody's clock approximately synchronized. When you aren't host, leave and go to friend's list immediately. Find the host. Watch their status. As soon as the game loads, press join, enter password and join as fast as you can.
8. At some point, the elixirs will expire. Usually the host will expire around 30-60 seconds before everyone else's does, because they were in a dungeon for a bit longer (a few seconds each game adds up). Since everyone worked together, the team's elixirs should all expire within 1 to 2 minutes of each others. This is why it was so important for people to join new games quickly.
9. At this point, you can choose as a group what you want to do. Whether it be to take a break or to redo. Everyone's elixirs expired at the same time, so you won't have 1-2 people leaving and the rest going on.
10. If you do choose to redo, well, because everyone's elixirs expired at nearly the same time, everybody can all go back together to their respective guild halls and buy elixirs again. Because everyone was synchronized within 1 minute, this is possible. Ordinarily, even in parties with everyone getting elixirs, they wouldn't expire at the same time. Anybody who has an expiring elixir will be forced to either give up the 10-15% discount to maintain their position, or to break off and risk losing their position. (Off topic, but if you do find yourself in such a situation, tell the host to save you a spot and that you are getting another elixir. Leave the game, head to the guild hall, and get a replacement then join the next game. Don't bother joining in the incomplete game you left because walking all the way to the boss is a waste and there's no assurance that you will get there in time.) Clear your inventory at this point.
This is as effective a usage of elixirs as possible. It will allow you to gain the maximum xp, get you the most runs completed (along with it, the highest probability of getting good loot since combo elixir has a luck elixir), and allow you to take advantage of the guild discounts on elixirs (small, but well worth it).
Other thoughts:
You may want to respec to a damage dealing build when you do this. You won't need the survivability that str makes, so go pure int mage, pure dex bird, or even pure dex bear. Use a staff as mage, long bow as bird (since auto has less damage and is slower) and long bow as bear. Your elixir will boost your survivability.
