After all, you don't pronounce "sonar" as "sound navigation and ranging"--you just say, "sonar" or "light amplification by stimulated emissions of radiation"--you just say "laser". I think if you wanted to go with 3 syllables, you'd spell it "l.o.l." or just type "laugh out loud".

I was going to argue that LOL isn't a dictionary defined word and both laser and sonar are...but it is. The world is a sad place when internet slang is in the dictionary.

Sadly, but truly, time marches ever onward. "Lol" now has a place in the sun, while perfectly good words like "peradventure" and "fardel" languish, underworked and unpaid.

Sorry it took so long to respond, but since I didn't predefine this ordeal in the rules, words such as "lol" will be accepted as one syllable. It would be unfair at this point to make entrees go back and change their submissions. It also depends how you pronounce the word. Some say "lawl" 1 syllable and some say "El-Oh-El", in the dictionary, sadly, they refer to the word as "el-oh-el" 3 syllables. I suppose we can base internet chat terminology based on how we would pronounce it. For example, "omg", if we were all to see this we would all say "Oh My God" 3 syllables. I can't even pronounce "omg" in 1 syllable, it just sounds funny. For future contests I will be sure to make it clear that if you use internet terminology we will be going by Dictionary pronunciation.

Oh how society has changed in the last few years and internet terms are actually defined in an English Dictionary...lol
