Captain Rutger was a ruthless, yet patriotic militiaman throughout the many years he defended the cities of Kraag and Kraatle. His vices held him towards his duties, and compelled him to protect his people, whom in turn worshiped their sworn protector in high gratitude. They viewed him almost as a god. However, not everyone is truly immortal.

It was until the city in the east, Kraatle had been stricken with a coup d'etat. The government had been dethroned by a warrior named Kroguur, a former member of the "Old Guard" that were sworn to protect the two cities and the neighboring lands. No one was quite sure the reasons why he went rogue without warning. Him and an unknown faction he was affiliated with massacred the citizens of Kraatle before word even broke the walls of Kraag. Kroguur even killed his own wife, Anne, and his two children without any emotion.

Rutger was immediately dispatched with a platoon of the city watch to investigate and stop the destruction before it could reach Kraag. After several days of fighting, Rutger returned victorious with only a fraction of his men, who all died days after due to injuries sustained on the battlefield. Kraatle was quarantined and the land was believed to be cursed. For weeks, the walls of Kraag were bombarded by undead warriors flooding in from the dead land that was once Kraatle, now widely known as the Dead City.

The citizens of Kraag felt safe as Algernon provided the city with defensive cannonfire, which kept the undead at bay. However, the Dead City kept expanding exponentially, and the undead kept evolving into more grotesque abominations. Rutger was once again sent out to push back the corruption and eliminate its cause. He was sent on countless expeditions that seemingly yielded no forward-moving results. Time was of the essence, and Rutger became more and more volatile each time he returned after his investigations. The people of Kraag were slowly watching their beloved hero lose his sanity. The abominations soon grew to overpower everything Kraag had to offer, and people began to lose hope as even the city's top warriors could not fight back. Many of the citizens evacuated to the mountains of Nordr. Some even sought refuge in Windmoore, yet many were cut down by the bandits in Ydra. Kraag's streets became barren, and almost all hope was lost.

News just recently came to Kraag of a great hero who single-handedly prevented a supernatural apocalypse in the western land of Ydra. This mysterious hero is now the only hope of preventing the corruption of the Dead City from spreading to the once-great city of Kraag.
