Commandos are classic tanks. Their aim is not to kill, but to maintain the aggro so that the others - the ops and engis - are able to kill off enemies without having to take laserbeams to their face (unlike you, the tank). So no, comms don't need high dps. Just some crowd control and a good cannon/rifle.
