One possible etymology is the idea that twinks are alts who benefit from gifts received through stash. Apparently this "benefiting from gifts" is an expected behavior from the other kind of twink. Similarly, Sparkle Ponies at Burning Man are people who arrive without water and have to rely on the kindness of strangers. I don't know if that is why morfic named his guild Sparkling Ponies, but I can see a link between the concept of a twink and a Sparkle Pony, and I'm not surprised to see these terms altered for a game, yet retain a semblance of their original meaning.

Twink for gaming has been in use for a while.

I actually did not know the other meaning until the last few years.
