I know you get 2 points of health for each point of defence, but that can't be it's only benefit. Is it a reduction in damage, or reduction in chance to be hit, or something else?

Yes it lowers damage you receive.
Pocket legends: Eagle (Endgame Bird), Magic (endgame mage), Getnuked (voodoo mage)
Star legends: Eng (Engineer), Rapid (operative)
Dark legends: Sucker (vampire queen)
