I enabled the mini-map in settings and when i tried to disable it (un-check the box), the mini-map does not disappear.

The checkbox in options is what hides / unhides the minimap button.

The minimap button is what hides / unhides the actual map.

So it sounds like you pulled up your map and then hid the minimap button in the options, which will not hide the map itself. It works like this because Chrome users can press "M" so they might rather have the button hidden.
