How about a third button to join teams?

There'd be red, blue and auto. Auto would result in auto team assignment based on some reasonable heuristic to yield as balanced teams as can be obtained with those that opted in. Perhaps even so that those that had opted in earlier could automatically be swapped from side to side if teams go 5 vs 2 or something.
