I am "middle class" and therefore I do not buy plat, I only get them via w3 and trial play (got 600 just for signing up as an ASPCA guardian - something I was going to do anyways). Problem solved.

It is not a private companies obligation to make every aspect of the game 'affordable' to every player. 99% of AL (so far) you can have access to without paying money or even getting free plat - try and focus on that rather than the 1% you may not be able to gain access to.

The only reason to open locked crates now is if you want a chance at the hammerjaw pet. If you're opening it for the gear, go buy it in the CS because it's way cheap. The reason why the gear is so cheap is because people open a crap ton of crates just to get the pet and sell the gear off.
