Fire Bug Elixir not functioning

I purchased this for one reason and the elixir doesn't work on the spider boss' ice patches in Crystal Caverns.

I want my platinum back; it doesn't work for me either.

I will have to find out if the design of the elixir is to also include the frost patches that boss puts out. I have a hunch that it isn't supposed to, as it would likely mitigate too much of that bosses intended difficulty.
