I feel that essence should take up no space but when condensed into a gem they do

yes yes yes. New player (fresh new) cant go to pve map due to too many essences, full inventory. So they probably walking around in town and gave up their day in AL without knowing the reason why they cant go for lvling. I saw this situation by myself.
