Default Prices and differences for the sets?

Looking at the end game gear for my dual mage, I noticed an odd trend in price ranges for gear, but not stats.

It seems for some gear, the stats are the same, but the prices are vastly different. For instance:

    Helmets

    Jacob's Helmet of the Rift
    Level 50, 154 STR
    11 STR, 8% Hit, 3% Crit, 2H/S, 1M/S, 4 Damage, 24 Armor
    53,000 Gold

    Jacob's Helmet of the Cosmos
    Level 50, 154 INT
    11 INT, 7% Hit, 3% Crit, 4H/S, 4M/S, 19 Armor
    34,000 Gold

    Overlord's Helmet of the Cosmos
    Level 50, 154 INT
    11 INT, 7% Hit, 3% Crit, 4H/S, 4M/S, 19 Armor
    105,000 Gold

    Shields

Force Kite Shield of the Rift
    Level 50, 158 STR
    11 STR, 8% Hit, 3% Crit, 2H/S, 1M/S, 4 Damage, 34 Armor
    29,999 Gold

Screaming Skull Shield of the Rift
    Level 50, 158 STR
    11 STR, 8% Hit, 3% Crit, 2H/S, 1M/S, 4 Damage, 34 Armor
    125,000 Gold

This is just an example and I couldn't do the Cosmos shields because there were only two on the Consignment Shoppe and I wasn't sure if there was a lesser version, but I will just compare the rift set for now.

I could purchase Jacobs Helm of the Cosmos and of the Rift, and throw in a Kite Shield of the Rift, and still spend less than on the Skull Shield alone. Is it because of the set bonuses people will spend more money on those? If Jacobs helmets add to the set then I don't see why people would pay so much more for just visuals I guess. Can anybody clue me in?

its because of the set bonus's. Not many people use the force kite (only people who use it cant afford full rift)

As pharcyde said, the more expensive ones are usually part of a bonus set. So if you're not gonna use the bonus, it's fine to have the cheaper one. Or use the cheaper one until you can get the full set.

I have about 600k gold so I can afford most pieces, but then again I am leveling up a Bow Bear to farm for my Mage to keep him pretty twinked at every level he reaches.
