This is exactly what we needed to track this down (none of us here have lots of friends ). It will be fixed for 1.4.1.

Nothing lags for me (except when there's 50 mobs on screen from rushes or high ping)

Lol at the friendless devs. Anyway, good catch. I never really thought about it, but I definitely suffer this problem most severely on my character with over 1000 friends.
