I'm guessing that this means that it will be taken from you at the end of the dungeon?

What's dumb is that you can't even use the shield with a forgotten weapon since they are 2 handed weapons. Instead of the shield they should give vanity armor. Then you have helm, armor and forgotten 2h weapon and it looks like a nice set.

Yes, but looks a bit ridiculous unless the 2h is a staff. With a bow it looks just a little bit ridiculous, and with a sword it looks like you have a hole in your shield.
