Happens to my phone sometimes. All you have to do is
Exit app, then click it again to play. This should fix that. If it doesn't, restart your device, if it still doesn't work, delete app, reinstall.

This is most likely a texture bug. Happens when I play Simpsons-Tapped Out.

As Ota pointed out, very simple fix. Log out of PL, close app, double click home button, hold PL icon, press the cross and open PL up again. This acts as a force close. Often helps with problems and glitches like this.
