Aww man! I wanted to create a thread to ask about that since it bothered me. ;)
Just kidding, did some researches and only found this:
http://www.spacetimestudios.com/showthread.php?14241-Most-users-ever-online-was-8-712-07-09-2010-at-12-15-PM
The same question asked ... 3 years ago. ;)
I looked at my Timeline: No special update or so.
I looked on Facebook: Nothing special.
Well would be cool if we could search threads and posts by it's date but we can't. Time to do some sport with scrolling down 1000's of threads I say!
The highest number of online users in the past weeks was almost 5k, though.
P.S.: I see myself online on the list! ;)
Hey I see me and its prob the announcement of PLs first event (Halloween) first ever

Announcing Halloween in July? Oo
That would be like saying Happy 2014 today.

Here are all the not deleted threads which were made on this date:
http://www.spacetimestudios.com/forumdisplay.php?6-PL-General-Discussion/page38&pp=25&sort=dateline&order=asc&daysprune=-1
http://www.spacetimestudios.com/forumdisplay.php?19-Off-Topic-Discussion/page9&pp=25&sort=dateline&order=asc&daysprune=-1
Nothing world-shattering actually.
I got two hypotheses:
1. The EC2 servers went down on that day
2. It was a stress test to see how many members the forums could handle before it shut down. Going by today's events, I have to go with #2 because the most likely answer.

Yeah #2 is more likely, they would have announced that maintenance like today.

Honestly, it was a bug with an older version of the chat box where crawler bots (like search engines and more nefarious web crawlers) got stuck in the chat box archives and after a couple of days without noticing, there were thousands and thousands of bots connected to the forums, trying over and over again to crawl through that archive.
I should probably nuke that number/date, but hey, there are probably better things to be done :).

Ohhh! Interesting to know that. Thanks. :)
But yes, my vote is to reset that number. It's kinda not to count as "valid". ;)

I didn't intend to bring this message from long ago but I found it interesting that the old record was shattered earlier today....
