Hey, I searched the forum for Buff and Root, and google, but the words are so common, it is hard to weed through all the results. I apologize, I know this has been asked a million times...

What is Buff? What is Root?

A buff is just an effect that improves your stats. For example the warrior skill Ironblood is a buff that raises (buffs) your armor by 50 points for 12 seconds.
A root is an effect that holds the affected target in place. The archer root skills do this, and the mage freeze skills essentially root as well. Stun differs in that the target is not just immobile but completely incapacitated, unable to move or act.

lol....I honestly didn't know the root term because of my Android background, rooting means, well, not that ;)

I just called it snaring. I also played Eve Online for a while and the term totally applies there too!

I just called it snaring.

I think in most contexts, snaring is considered slowing the enemies movement, while rooting is stopping it completely.

yah, this is the first MMO I have ever played. So I figured these were some kind of MMO terms that I just didn't know. =]

i just call the specific skill of archers (thorn wall) to root someone... looks like roots rising up so why not.

Hehe, good explanation Royce, I hadn't thought about that distinction.
