you need to complete the quest that gives you glepnir. you don't need the item itself.

As Limsyoker mentioned you only need to have completed the quest, not have the actual item.

The game is just based around a story told through the quests...
Kind of makes sense you have to finish the exisiting parts before moving onto the next...

This was a bad decision. For nordr the maps were too hard to play without leveling in tombs/hauntlet. For kraken the entrance was hidden and they had to out signs up and an I game announcement. It seems they like making awesome new content and then finding ways not to let us play it right away. :(
