Yeah, the origin is from "chat speak" for elite - 1337 --> LEET, a/k/a/ "elite".

So, given that it's braggadocio, mis-spelled, and then further mangled by inane "chat speak", I personally never user it.

HUSH BOI, ITS NOT CHAT SPEAK ITS LEET SPEAK!

It essentially means elite or pro. So if someone says "Yeah I got a KDR of 5.0 on MW2, I'm so 1337" it means he's boasting about how "pro" he is. In other words, every time you see 1337, replace it with pro and it's the same thing.

It's called leet speak and this is what it looks like: 1 4M 1337 U 15 4 N00B. ORIGINALLY it was used ONLY with numbers but newfags came and started saying it was like this: |-|1 |)3|23 1 |2 G4Y.
