View Full Version : is it worth it?

Is it worth it buying an Ipad mini? I have used a kindle fire ever since they came out. I got it for Christmas at the time and have not been impressed at all since then. In the first year I had 3 replacements and knew someone with 9 replacements. Now it has been past my 1 year warranty and my 3rd replacement is breaking too, but amazon won't replace it now that the warranty is up. I also use a ipod 4th generation. I saved up $200 after a few years of cutting grass to get an ipod and bought the ipod ive been wanting. The 4 gen was the new one so I got it. The first night I had it, I was already not impressed. It says in the description it holds 10+ hours of battery. I got 3 hours IF I was lucky. I returned it thinking it was a flawed one. The replacement had the same problem but also crashed frequently. I returned it but they said I couldn't get my money back, only replace it. I thought this was really stupid but I had either 2 choices; replace it, or waste the $200 I spent years saving up for a device called an ipod that I always heard great things about and loved as soon as I tried a friend's. The third replacement had the same issues. I put up with them; the frequent charges, crashes, apps not downloading. The only thing good was that I could listen to my favorite music anywhere, anytime. But now, a year later, I am sick of putting up with an ipod that doesn't work. Now that I turned 16 and finally on Tuesday was able to take my driving test and passed, I would like to try and get a job, and get something better. I got an email a month or so back from Apple about their new Ipad mini. The full size ipad is too expensive but works wonderful when I tried one out. So I was wondering, is an ipad mini good, and worth the price? Thanks in advance
-Scary

EDIT: yay now it's completely broken ( -_- ) so those of you who know me I won't be on pl for a while probably. Unless i can finally get used to playing on a computer. I looked at reviews for the iPod 4 gen and turns out I wasted $200 and its not just me with problems; they discontinued the 4 gen. No one sells it anywhere now. Makes me kind of pissed now my kindle fire has no screen display other than these crazy lines (I'll try to get a pic, it's weird) and my iPod I can use for the forums but pl crashes. So in game I'm gone for a while but forums I'm still here (for now unless the iPod breaks completely too).

iPad's are the the best!
My battery lasts around 4~5 hours while playing AL/PL.

I've had my Kindle for a year and haven't had to exchange it.
It has some power issues. (Only charges when I put it in a certain position)

I say go for it bro!

I was actually in the exact same shoes as you. I used an iPod 2 forever, then got the Kindle Fire. I had to replace the Kindle Fire FIVE times, and then I finally got my money back. I was wanting an iPad 3, yet I didn't wanna wait until Christmas. I got the iPad Mini, and I've been nothing but impressed. It runs so much more smooth than the Kindle Fire, it seems like it has better WiFi connection, meaning less ping :D It has just impressed me, and I'm so glad I got it. I'm sure that its just luck, but I have dropped this thing from about 4ft off the ground at least 3 times, (Clumsy me) and twice on its screen, and it hasn't broken yet xD Once again that <-- may be just luck, but it might just be made nice o.o If you have any questions other than just in general is it nice, I'll answer them. Other people may suggest other things, but all I'm saying is that I've been in your shoes, and you shouldn't be disappointed with the iPad Mini.

This is what I don't get the point of a iPad is so it is big. So what's the point of iPad mini when a iPad is supposed to be big, I'd suggest a regular iPad !

Ok thanks guys. I'll be saving up for an iPad mini then. Once I hopefully get a job, I'll have about $230 to go (so much :( ) @archer: a regular iPad is too much money and the mini is like $100+ cheaper than regular iPad.

Also about that iPod crashing alot I had that problem as well. I've had my iPod 4th generation for 2 years now but about that crashing thing, it went out of power this one day so I went to charge it after that it stopped crashing frequently, so my advice is try to turn off the iPod for a few minutes then open it and see if it crashes as much.

The ipad mini is about to be replaced. If you must get a tablet then I suggest the following in order from best choice to worst

1.Kindle fire HDX7 (starts at 229 for 16GB)

2.Nexus 7 2013 (starts at 229 for 16GB) the Kindle fire hd has a better processor and is generally more bang for the buck

3.Ipad mini 2nd nothing is confirmed yet but it will be a typical hardware update over last year's model. Fingerprint sensor and all.

4.Kindle fire HD (starts at 139) by far the cheapest fix. This is a new device with a new design but is essentially made with hardware from 2012. It's got more than enough horsepower to play sts games though.

5.Ipad mini 1 (starts at 299) if you enjoy overpaying for hardware, go ahead and purchase this one :) it's got a shoddy 1024x768 resolution, an outdated A5 processor, and a new one is weeks away from unveil. Really, you couldn't wish you purchase the ipad mini 1 at a worse time.

It will be plenty of time until I have money to get something (if im lucky ill be working at a mcdonalds or something) so I can wait for iPad mini if the new one is good. Both my little cousins have a kindle fire hd and so does my little brothers best friend but they just got them and haven't said if its good yet. Plus with my experiences with amazon and kindle fires both, I'm not sure of I'm willing to spend my money for them again.

The Kindle fire hd I'm referring to isn't out yet. It is essentially the same device as the one your cousins have but it has a new body.
If you are against the Kindle fires then go for the nexus 7. I've got both the new one and the 2012 model and can honestly say they've been my most used gadgets in an array of game consoles, PCs, phones, tablets, portable game systems, etc.

I can't think which is better to do. Try and see if I can sell my games in app stores and turn them into apps (I've started in game designing for fun) . Or I also am a farmer and part of what I do is pigeons. I raise them, breed, and show them. My mom wouldn't be happy about it but as long as I don't keep their babies and sell them I'm sure it's fine. I am extremely good with both computers and animals so those I think are my best choices to make some money off of. I've won champion, best of show, and 1st place all with just one bird before so that will help a lot with sales to other breeders. I'm just looking for some advice, I know it's my choice. I don't think working for someone else like a McDonalds is going to work out for someone like me. And STS if a post like this is against the TOS, I am sorry. I didn't really look to see. If an example of a game I made will help, and its allowed on a different game forum, I can try to post one.

Cases that charge your device? Never heard of that before. Are they expensive?
EDIT: I looked it up. First of all it seems to only be for a phone, secondly it is a lot of money for a case, and third it only gives 30 seconds of use after turning the crank handle for 1 minute.

I really doubt they will make pl for Xbox. And I honestly don't think anyone would be happy with just 4 skills like you're saying. I guess I can't really relate though since I don't use Xbox. Last I used an Xbox was when the first version of it came out so its been what, like 9-10 years. Gosh I remember playing the original Halo on that thing. My parents were against video games so luckily back then my best friend happened to be my next door neighbor. Every day after school we'd spend hours on Halo until the Xbox overheated. But I don't know how the newer Xbox is so I can't really answer to pl for Xbox.

If money is a concern I suggest you get a Samsung tablet. They're less expensive, and work wonderfully. You can also do some research and side-by-side comparisons of say any Samsung tablet, and the iPad mini. Don't limit yourself to just Apple products there's plenty devices that are equally as good or better without the high price tag.

No I did not. It was already having charging issues and I went to turn it on but it didn't go on. So I plugged it in and nothing happened. I tried again and the charge light went on then off then on again. Then the screen came on and was like that. If anything happened to it then its because the day before was when I left it downstairs and not in my room like I always do. So unless my brothers did something to it (I could imagine they did but there's no proof and I can't go around just blaming them) then nothing happened.

Ok. My Wii doesn't work anymore so I have 3 CoD's. World at War, Black ops, and Modern Warfare 3. I also have a few old Nintendo DS games laying around somewhere. None of those are new releases but they aren't usable by me and still worth something.

Would all that go away? Or does it save to my Apple account. I know I read somewhere about it but it was a while ago and I forget.

I know that isn't anywhere around me. I had a place called Hollywood Video who did movie rentals and sold/bought games but then Redbox and Netflix came out and they shut down. Now it's just GameStop. I've sold to GameStop before though and just 2 games made me $30. Of course that was when Nintendo DS's were popular still. I think they buy around me based on popularity and demand of the game. Call of Duty is a very popular game and with 3 to sell I'm sure ill make something good. Anything is helpful though, I really don't care how much they take my games for.

They are both cheaper and have good ratings. The first gen nexus 7 is more in my price range than the galaxy 3 tablet and they both use the same android Jelly Bean 4.1 operating system. The nexus 7 first gen gets around 9.5 hours of battery while the galaxy 3 tablet gets around 11 hours. So I'm stuck here; they both are good enough for me but if anyone has used one or both of these and has an opinion which is better I'd gladly like to hear it. So I'm stuck here; they both are good enough for me but if anyone has used one or both of these and has an opinion which is better I'd gladly like to hear it. I know there was one post I saw saying the first gen nexus 7 is awesome but what about the galaxy 3 tablet.

I need to just make up my mind already. Keep seeing one thing then another and then another...ahhhh. Ok so anyone tried the Samsung galaxy 2 7" tablet with 8gb of memory? It runs on an older version of android (4.0 Icecream sandwich I think it said) but in the reviews it's said to be better than the Kindle fire hd (I can see that with my experience with a kindle fire) and some said its better than some Apple products. If anyone has their opinion or if anyone uses/has used this please let me know. Thanks.

A first Gen nexus 7 trounces any low end galaxy tablet. You said previously that the tab 3 and nexus 7 have the same android 4.1? Wrong. Being a nexus device the nexus 7 has access to Android 4.3, the latest and greatest. Expect to be receiving os updates atleast through 2014. Also, the nexus 7 surpasses processing power of most of the budget galaxy tablet systems. It's a no Brainer. The galaxy tab 2 is not even close to a kindle fire hd. If better than an apple product you mean better than an ipad 1 then yes, it's slightly better than an apple product.

EDIT: the Samsung galaxy nexus phone released in 2011 is still receiving os updates and is set to receive android 4.4 Kitkat. Expect the nexus 7 to outlive any galaxy tablet currently available (even the latest octa core galaxy note 10.1) in os updates.

I'm saying galaxy tablet 2 because it is the only tablet I can afford that is near me. I searched Nexus 7, iPad mini, galaxy 3, in the store finder for different stores in my area. None of those items are even in a 50 mile radius of the State that I live in. That's why I'm saying galaxy 2.

I'd say avoid the galaxy tab 2 at all costs. In my personal experience the touch screen is very unresponsive, you've got to press really hard to get some stuff going sometimes, not to mention it's an overall lackluster display with poor resolution compared to the nexus 7. As I said a few pages back, the new Kindle fire hd that is not out yet/will come out in a few weeks is a great device for only 139$. I think you and many people on this thread are showing an incredible bias to the Kindle tablets. As for having poor support, the new OS the device has just received includes a feature where you can live chat with an assistant to get support on whatever issue you may have. When it comes out it will most likely show up at your local best buy, Walmart, target, etc. Since its a newer device.

Ok I talked to my dad. If I go to Walmart later, I will buy the galaxy and try it. Then in just under a week my dad will be able to give me what else I need to buy the nexus 7 online and I will return the galaxy.

Thank you to everyone who gave their advice and opinions in this thread. They were all very helpful and helped me find what I am going to do. I will wait a week until I can get a nexus 7. So those who know me, I'll be back online after this coming Friday.

I'd wait on buying and apple product since they come out with a new once ever 6-7 months now. Not bashing apple though since I'm writing this on and ipad 2 but its really just a smarter idea to look at all your options though. Like maybe a galaxy phones (and android for that matter) I hear there very good (some times better then apple) and there MUCH better then the ipad mini I here and see so really it's just comes down to this.

DO YOU want a device that's going out of date and no longer updated on in a year or so or do you want a phone that's going to last you for a long time with lots of updates and much creative content that you control?

Apple notes
Now I do have to admit I loved apples products a lot (being i had my ipod 2 for years and even played pl on it) but with me waiting in line for my ipad 2 just to hear that the ipad 3 comes out 1 week after I bought my ipad made me pretty angry. BUT what made me even more angry and a bit saddened was when I saw my ipad at the bottom of a ios 7 update list (meaning) any devices under ipad2 to 5 gen iPod to iPhone 4S was just told to (go fluck yourself with updates or new content) EVEN BETTERLY MEANING you just got f'ed out of jailbreaks and ios7 if you where planing on doing that because ios6s last update got the hammer to jailbreaking. (For now)

So how good is that mini now? Oh wait there's already a new one out:/

I'm not getting anything from Apple now. In the post above yours I said I decided to get a Nexus 7.
