View Full Version : Weapon damage as spell damage...

I am a lvl 39 pure Int mage, who groups with a buddy who is a lvl 39 paly. I have been using a want/shield for the extra armor, but I read a thread a few days ago saying that the weapon damage affected my aoe spell damage.

I just wanted to see if that is true or not.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Should be true... Weapon damage will affect the damages made by skills ;)

It is true. You will see the full effect when 1.6 comes out.

It's true. I'm a pure mage and depending on my group and what we are fighting I'll switch between a staff and wand/shield. Lately I've only been using the staff to clear out lower level dungeons quickly for pink drops. I've been preferring the extra armor and weaker damage in the higher dungeons to protect myself and not pull aggro as quickly. I'm still on the fence for which is better in PvP.

True, there was a big debate about it awhile ago. After much testing it was found that a portion of the weapon damage was put into spell damage.

Is this based on hard weapon damage or DPS?

Not true, I tested it. Using mega blaster and laser talon gave me the same skill damage for blast shot. Haven't tested in mage, but not true on archer

What you see listed on the skill or what it actually does? Right now, these are different, but will be fixed in 1.6 so you can actually see in the skill that mega does more skill damage then the talon.

Damage itself is not the test its the average. Some guy actually went and charted tons of hits on mirage and keeper staff. The average spell damage and criticals tells the story.

I actually did that, but not sure if you are talking about me or someone else ;)

Wouldn't there be a time when have a wand/shield outweigh using a staff in either offensive or defensive situations? I only ask because I got a wand that yields a MUCH higher DPS that my staff and the only damage difference for the skills is about 15 points on either end. The wand also happens to have 0.5 speed which is probably what is making them very comparable.

Sorry I forgot to rotate the image but here's the wand that dropped. The speed seems odd though since no other wand in the CS is under 1.

^^^ DPS means nothing to mages.

Use your staff, the only time a wand and eye is better is when you need extra armor.

The higher damage on staff also means higher group damage from splash damage and spells. Which 1 fireblast spell is enough to make up 20 dps a couple hundred times over.

I figured that but it just seemed odd that the change in damage for the spells wasn't that big between either set up. Granted I haven't hit 50 yet so things may be considerably different then. It seemed like I was killing things faster but it could just be that I was seeing things. I only had 4 hours of sleep so it wouldn't shock me if that was the case.

so weapon to skill damage is based on actual weapon damage and has nothing to do with dps? meaning a big slow weapon is better than a faster weapon with high speed for skills?

also 1 other question- does weapon damage also affect how much heal will heal you for?

I'm an enchantress, the reason why they are fun is because they can heal and revive.

I respectfully disagree,, because obviously healing and reving ain't fun,, I like nuking the mobs and aoeing not being a healer and rever

I disagree with you :) My favorite part of Enchantress is healing. It gives me the ability to solo while making money since I don't burn through potions.

Also No Revive = Not happy party. If your party isn't happy then your play experience is going to suck.

For mages yes. The thing that defines mages the best is their massive Area of Effect damage. So slow bulky weapons increase Area of Effect the most.

also 1 other question- does weapon damage also affect how much heal will heal you for?

No. Your heal is based on your level of healing. Then beyond that its based on how much hp needs to be restored and the range of the spell.

Well I guess it is true for Drain life. It is a damage spell and higher damage = more stolen hp.

Yeah you will notice that weapons with higher DPS work better in lower levels. This is because lower level enemies don't have much armor. So yes things change quite traumatically at level 50 when enemies have insane defenses.
