I've heard from someone that it took them 500 locks (4,500 plat) for their first mythic item (rogue helm) and 2,000 locks (30,000 plat) to loot their first arcane item (hammerjaw).
You knew it was a gamble going in.

You should have stopped after some increment, then restarted after while.
When open locks it's important never to do so many in one go, you never know how your luck might have changed you if open more the next day or even next week.
