Twink Pet Leveling Question

Perhaps a dumb question, but I've never had a twink before....

Let's suppose you have a twink that is level 8, and you want to have multiple level 8 pets. You obviously have to turn off XP or else your twink will pass level 8. But how do you level up your pets then? Do your pets still level up even if you turn off XP?

If you disable your xp and fight, you won't get xp but your pet will.
Your pet will stop gaining xp once it's scaled to your toon's level.

Your pet goes to the exact same lvl and exact same amount of xp as where you are.
