IMHO it's pretty clear this was designed to be a gold sink.
That is, rich players will spend a lot of gold (say 40m if they keep it, or someone else 100m if they buy), and only earn one pet, which, even if it's amazing, won't help them become more rich, at least not more than Sammy and arcane ring already do.
So, please everyone, stop complaining that S&S are for rich players only. It was meant to be this way, from the very beginning.

Well yeah, it's more like "make rich poor" than a gold sink. But serves the same purpose.

The rich are rich coz they are plat spenders or great merchants,so they becoming poor is impossible.

If someone spent 40m and kept the egg, they gave 40m away.
If someone spent 40m and sold for 100m, someone else lost 100m, so in the end gold still moved from richer to poorer.

I'm sorry but wtf are u talking about??? The gold is moving from rich people to rich people, how can a poor person make profit in ur theory?

Purpose of LB is quite simple. Its for STS to make profits. Why do you think they kept arcane rarity pet as a prize inspite of so many rant threads. People wont go the distance if vanities were kept as prize. They invested huge amounts of RL money for that pet. Some sold and made a profit and rest hatched..

While this isn't a gold sink the lb does allow for gold to be moved around. Most lb players are spending gold, not plat to reach their positions. The people that are converting plat to gold via the energy kits make out well during these events. These may be existing rich players or brand new players but it is a method that can be used to convert plat to gold. The more options available to convert plat to gold the better.
The lb was created to generate revenue for STS. There is no other reason. Energy kits are worth 5 plat a piece. That's a good deal of plat to be able to reach the top 10 of the lb. Whether the lb player or someone else paid the plat, it is spent on these kits. Money in the bank for STS. I just hope it keeps them turning out events. They are great for the game. Keep em coming!!

A gold sink does not mean making the rich poor. It means taking gold out of circulation. That is from rich, poor, middle class, everyone.

The lb players made money from this event. Even if they invested 50mil, S&S sold for double that. The people that didn't place top 10 definitely lost money running the event map. So some rich people got richer, some lost money.

Problem is, poor and middle class don't need gold sink.
Anyway, gold sink will never ever work, because rich people will only buy if it doesn't hurt them noticeably. Gold sinks will never eliminate a significant amount of gold, unless it's an über awesome vanity that everyone just MUST have.
I'm starting to think that simply letting the inflation go is the practical alternative to gold sink.

It doesn't have to make an immediate noticeable impact. A good gold sink eliminates gold overtime. Not very noticeable. For example, having gold revives. Good sinks work perfectly fine. Al is not the world's first mmo, and plenty others successfully implement them.
You have to think about it over time, and not huge chunks at once. Taking small amounts from a lot of people over a long period.
A good gold sink must also be something that is optional. Not a requirement to play the game, otherwise you affect poor players as well (e.g. pots are a very poor gold sink)
It's also a very interesting generalization you're making that the winners were poor. Not true at all necessarily.
