Flaming crossbows

I got a flaming crossbow from the store because it says that there's a chance of extra fire damage. Then I noticed that the fire damage wasn't coming at all. When I equipped the flaming crossbow, my DPS decreased by 8; however, I thought that the extra fire damage wasn't included in the DPS average. Can someone explain to me how the extra fire damage works? Thanx.

Every now and then, when you are attacking a monster you get a little extra fire-power so to speak added to your usual hit. It's not often so that may be the reason that you didn't notice it.
