What does being thanked and +1 mean

I looked at my profile just now and I notices that I was thanked 12 times in 6 posts....I mean..I understand what it means when some says thank you but is there something more to it than just appreciation...Its being kept track of for some reason and I'm curious what that is...And +1s I got a couple of those in one of my posts..Is there something to that as well??

1 thank = 2 reputation points.
1 green thumb = A formula in which the number of posts, number of times thanked, and number of thanks given are factors.
1 dark green bar = 100 reputation points.
1 light green bar = 200 reputation points.

@OP,
when yours says "thanked 12 times in 6 posts", it means:

other people (in all the posts you were thanked) in total gave 12 thanks and these thanks were given on 6 of your posts.

"+1" has changed over time. It is commonly misused from its original usage.

Often, people think it means "I agree" to whatever the original poster said, or whatever they are quoting.

The true meaning of putting "+1" is, well...exactly that: "+1 to my post count." It is spam, at the end of the day. Having more posts on your account on message boards/forums looks good (generally)--and on some sites, gives you special privileges. The most common ones are 10-100 posts before you can make a thread or post pictures. I've been on a site where you can approve/flag profile pictures when you hit 1,000.

In the old days, when post count really meant something, the +1 was commonly spammed all over. This became an issue and forum moderators began to suspend/ban users. As a result, posters would quote a post and add "this" to dodge looking like spam. The bold would add "+1," especially as time continued and the bannings became less frequent as post count became less meaningful.

As more people started using forums and message boards, they were seeing the "this +1" posts, and so now today, most people use "+1" to agree, thinking that's what it has always meant.
