The heart resets when every one dies and the mini bosses get nocked out and the heart wont drop its shield! And when you reset the boss you can nock out 2 mini bosses and one stays unnocked out with no health bar.

One of the oldest bugs around, yep. Already posted on bug list on the top of this subforum.

If my guess is correct, not using skyward smash should prevent this from happening.
