Did you just lend him the items? If so there's nothing you can do. If you give someone anything in this game it becomes theirs. You should never give anything to anyone unless you are prepared to not get it back. Some people are not the friends they may appear to be, and other things can happen like someone just deciding to stop playing. It's fine to lend stuff to friends but in the back of your head you should always acknowledge that you may not see the item again.

You don't have to quit. It will take some time to get your items again, but you can do it. It's not like a new campaign/cap is immanent or anything. You've got time.

It's not like any items in this game are irreplaceable (other than the untradable ones). If you're going to quit over the loss of some items, then you don't really like the game all that much.

Chalk it up to a lesson learned and start farming.

Um, I farmed almost all my items. You can too!
And I always play for awhile before spending any amount of money on items I can farm. You can too!
And I don't remember any character being unplayable because I could not purchase something.
Farming works. Do it.
