Well he does have a good Happiness bonus for a Warrior, and his AA increases dodge and damage. That doesn't sound like a Vanity pet to me. Vanity is just for looks and doesn't help you but to look better, Ewen can help you.

Ewen is good for war, decent boost. And a ribbit like skill to support party. Just shorter range.
