what is PING?

I'm trying to figure this out. I am kinda comp/phone technical stuff illiterate.

My ping has been going crazy though. It went from in the hundreds to 60000+ in about a minute. Whats the deal with that?

What is ping and what does it do?

Ping shows how good your connection is between you and the server.

The higher the ping, the more your lag, and vice versa.

I think the goal ping of STS is in the 500s. Meaning half a second of difference between server and player.

Anything over a 500 and the game gets really hard...your character can become seriously unresponsive. I think asommers said that if it ever gets above 10k, go ahead and relog -- you probably aren't coming back. If you watch it, every 1000 ping counts for a second of your time; it's measured in milliseconds.

STS' goal is for all players to have 500 ping or less. There is the rare occurrence of a ping spike, but one od the best ways I have found is making sure no other devices are hooked up to that wi fi server (xbox live kills your ping)

That could help if ever. To improve, its really like any other online thing, it might be more users using your wifi with downloads etc.

Also if your using your vphone and you get a text message your ping goes up sometimes goes down quick.

I lovingly call it the ping off death. ....which reminds me I need to buy health pots

the Ping test depends on the server to which the packets are sent, some times when u connect a site to a slower server your PING becomes low, try ping testing different sites using WhoisXY.com (http://www.whoisxy.com/ping.aspx) and check it

It's basically how well your connection is
Small=good
Large=bad
In 10000's=lag spike (should go away soon)
