Free until a certain level. 18 I believe if you verify your account.
Afterwards you'll need to spend money to buy new maps, which unlock levels.
Money (or platinum if you convert it) will also allow you to buy game features such as more inventory space, some good looking vanity helms, and the like.
Not that expensive, people have gone through the entire game with spending the least possible. Around $20 maybe?
And there's also an option to get free platinum through the Tapjoy offer wall. :)

Delete and reinstall
You can level from 1-13 in Forest Haven. Then run over to Dark Forest and you can go from level 13-18 for free. This will let you have a little more experience with the game, then you can decide if you wish to purchase platinum on additional dungeons, or obtain platinum for free using the Tapjoy feature.
All additional dungeons cost 10 platinum, so you can take a look and calculate roughy how much platinum you are going to need, and which dungeons you want to purchase. You can get to level 56 without spending much, and trust me..it's worth it

On the main avatar menu (the screen you are at when you log on) click "Earn free platinum" Then click "yes" and it will take you to the tapjoy wall. Download free apps for 1 platinum a piece, be sure to log out of PL, run each app for a few seconds, then when you log back in the platinum should be there. If it isn't, log back out then in, and give it time.

with free platinum, it's really long to get a lot... Put you can rise to lv 30 easilly

is it me or has PL stoped offering free platinum in the download apps section?
Each day there would be 1 free platinum by downloading a specific app.
Hasnt been one for a week so far??

I am not certain.
The content you can purchase is well worth it though. The money coming in to the Devs pocket is a great thing. The money they make is great great great incentive to keep adding on to PL. :)
