I just tried this several times a couple of minutes ago and it worked... so yes, it still works.
Meh, here's a simple and extremely quick way on how to root your G2.:
Go to settings > Applications > and make sure "Unknown sources" is checked, it should be on.
Go to the market and download and app called 4Shared by Lovemaq, not goodev.
Lovemaq's is just a link I think, but meh it works.
After you download it open it, it should prompt you to a browser looking type screen that says search and up top files, video, music, ect.
Files should already be selected.
On the search box type in Visionary apk, exactly like that "Visionary apk" with a space between them, no dots no nothing.
Press search and it should show you "MoDaCo Visionary Plus r14.apk".
Click on it and it should make you wait 20 seconds or so until it shows a "Click here to download this file".
Click on it (clicking on it is a little annoying it may not be accurate so just keep trying) and it should download the APK of visionary.
Once it downloads, open the APK and install it.
Once you install it, click done.
Exit everything (at this point you can uninstall 4shared).
Open your drawer where it shows all your apps and look for "VISIONary+".
Open it and it should give you some options, to temproot (temporarily root it) just click on "Temproot now" and don't touch anything until the app closes, it may go black, but just don't touch anything until the app closes or it takes you back to the VISIONary+ menu.
After that your phone should be rooted, go to your drawer and scroll down... if you see superuser then your phone is temporarily rooted.
For temproot just click "Attempt Permroot now" and it should root it and reboot your phone.
Once your phone turns back on if you have Superuser then your phone was rooted.
To unroot your phone just open VISIONary+ and click "Unroot now" and it should unroot your phone and reboot your phone.
There you have it, your phone is now rooted.
