Can anyone help me/offer advice on how to adjust my settings to reduce lag as much as possible on my 3g? thanks!

Turn all push notifications for Apps off under Settings > Notifications, and then go under Mail, Contacts, Calendar under Settings as well and either turn mail push completely off, or if you leave it on, check Manually down at the bottom. Seemed to help on my 3GS, so I assume it would help on a 3G. If you have mail push on in the background, your phone will lag a bit every time your phone tries to get mail.

Also make sure you have all apps in the background closed out...if you have iOs 4.0+, doubletap the home button and close out as many backgrounded apps as you can by holding the icon for a couple of seconds and deleting it...doesn't delete the app, just closes it all the way.

You can also uncheck high quality in your PL settings.

whatever you do, it's still quite lag and takes forever when you change zone

then I decided to get a ipod touch 4g only for gaming and it runs much better than iphone 3g

Last case scenario, enable double pixel.

whats the double pixel?

It makes your screen display as a double pixel, so it looks quite pixelated.

It looks bad, really bad, but it definitely helps with performance. :)

Don't bother on a 3G.

fyi, pixel double is not a helpful option for anything but ipad and iphone4.

Also... Turn off 3g when not using it. Cellular reception takes up ram and processor power. Since the Iphone 3g is showing it's age now with an outdating gpu and cpu (412 mhz) any strain off of it will help it run better.
