wand/staff question

please forgive me and gimme the link to read if this question is already answered somewhere else :)

what is the difference between the fire, ice, lightning and dark attack from different mage weapons? like any special effect or something?

i'm now using a lightning wand, it looks cool, but i'd love to know if it has something else other than being cool :)
