Root means be a SuperUser of your phone, mean be the ruler. Is best because u can do billion things being with a rooted phone, my device is rooted. And best way to root is using a app called Root1Click, isn't in Play Store, i can send you the link.

You cant unroot, but you can restore the OS back to touchwiz if you dont like Cyanogenmod.
Also if your phone is new and high end, i dont recommend root. But if you have something like Samsung Galaxy S3 then I strongly recommend it. Makes the phone much faster.
After root, you can do LITERALLY everything you want. (Yes, even install windows RT)
Youtube helps a lot and XDA Developers fourums has all the downloads and non-graphic guides.

No warranty, and if you are on a upgrade plan you can't use that phone to upgrade.

Try installing SuperUser in Play Store, ( Don't open it ) and install KingRoot, and touch in the green circle. Tadá, ur phone is rooted.
