Barney eggs are useless to everyone. Every new player gets a barney egg before reaching traveler's outpost which is the first place they can actually see the auction to buy one. So nobody is going to buy them in the auction.
Since this was an honest mistake on Spacetime's part, how about you just exchange all barney eggs in everyone's inventory with a brand new pet owl chest for them to open and retry their luck.... That sounds fair to me. The resulting population of these pets will end up the same as if the mistake had never been made.
