Who would have higher skill damage, a pure str bear, or a hybrid str/dex bear? Both bears in the same equipment of course. Figured id ask here before I waste plat on respecs to find out lol.

Hybrid str/ dex. I personally have exactly 173 str with gear on. Rest pumped into Dex. Hope this helps!

str helps skill damage more than dex. however dex is important for hit and crit, aswell as ading dodge. the higher your str lvl the more damage your str skills give.

Ya I think i'll respec back to that with just enough str to equip my high end items and the rest goes to dex since it really helps when you're in a mob or on a hard boss and need to keep agro while dealing a nice amount of damage.

Btw have the devs made it to where your stats effect the amount of damage your skills do?

I'm not aware of the specific calculation of it, and what (if there is one) the perfect combination of str/dex to get the highest skill damage.

I'll quote Phys again,

There's two things you need to think about: Damage vs skill damage. Damage is what you do when you do normal attacks, and it is seen in your character stat screen as "Damage: 192-204".

For damage:
1 point of STR = +0.02 damage
1 point of INT = +0.08 damage
1 point of DEX = +0.15 damage

As you can see, DEX adds the most normal damage per 1 attribute point used.

For skill damage:
STR adds more skill damage for bears
DEX adds more skill damage for birds
INT adds more skill damage for mages

But you also have to take into account that skill damage is calculated using a portion of your damage. So bears with high STR can have high skill damage, but bears with STR/DEX can also have high skill damage because DEX increases your damage by a lot, which in turns increases your skill damage.

Dex is as important though due to Hit/Crit. Even if your skill damage is the highest it can be, if you can't hit, it'd be useless.

Overall, I like to look at it as:

Str : Raises my skill damage
Dex : Better Hit/Crit. Raises my skill damage a bit due to increase in (base) damage.

Right now I am sitting at 180 str, the rest dex. I was thinking that going full str would maybe increase my skill damage, but after reading this, it seems as if I'm gonna stick with my current build. Thanks for the answers/advice everyone!

Since Dex increases Hit/Crit, it increases the effective damage of skills and weapons.

Think of it this way:

1% in hit (up to a limit) increases overall damage by 1% (all hits). Why? Because for every 100 hits, you'll hit 1 additional time (on average). Since this applies to both skills and weapons, that's an overall 1% increase in damage.

The exact same result occurs with crit. Increase crit 1% and for every 100 hits, you get double damage on one -- so, 101 effect hits -- a 1% increase in overall damage.

Plus the regular damage increase. Plus the dodge helps tank.

Dex seems to be a win/win for a bear -- so long as you have enough strength to equip your favorite weapons.

What's unclear is what a good split for the 5 points at each level should be on the way up. Do you do 4 str 1 dex? 3 str 2 dex?

Luckily you can play with the numbers and see their effects (on everything but skill) without respecing.

So, let's try this out with 65 points:

Base:
Hit% = 65
Crit = 1
Dodge = 1
Health = 604
H/s = 0
Damage = 46-56
Armor = 1

All Str (+65 str):

+2 crit, +2 dodge, +32 health, +2 H/s, +1 Damage, +4 Armor

All Dex (+65 dex):

+11 Hit%, +2 crit, +1 dodge, +1 H/s, +11 Damage, +2 Armor

+43 Str +22 Dex: (2/3 str, 1/3 dex):

+4 Hit %, +2 crit, +2 dodge, +21 Health, +2 H/s, +4 Damage, +3 Armor

+52 Str, +13 dex (4/5 str, 1/5 dex):

+3 Hit%, +2 crit, +2 dodge, +26 Health, +2 H/s, +3 Damage, +3 Armor

Interesting points:

They both seem to have the same effect on crit, but dex has less effect on dodge than strength.
They both increase armor, but strength about twice as much as dex.
The displayed numbers are rounded. The actual effects aren't.
The effect on skills with the hit% may counteract some of the loss of skill damage when going hybrid. I can't see for certain without actually respecing a few times. At higher levels, when gear boosts hit% even more, you may hit the effective limit -- around 85% from phys mechanics thread -- and so extra points are largely wasted. That does, however, give flexibility in gear choice.

I've been going pure strength, but I don't think the choice is as easy with a bear as an enchantress (where going full int helps the most).

Although a pure strength bear is the best tank, doing some damage is nice, too. :)

For skill damage, I'd say dex and str, I think the hit and crit definitely let's you deal more damage with your skills as opposed to pure str.

How do you get exactly 173 str (including gear)?

How do you get exactly 173 str (including gear)?

Put on all your final gear (Fury set, or whatever you want on).

Respec your str down to 173.

Do note that you CANNOT remove even a single piece if you wish to keep that amount. When you remove one piece, everything comes off and you can't put them back on again.

I've only respecced once before, so correct me if i'm wrong. I distinctly remember the game removig all
My gears as soon as i hit the "ok" confirmation to respec (due to me going down to 1 str). So how exactly shoud i tespec?

Oh, you don't respec your str all the way to 1.

Lets say your current base str is 200 and your actual total str (with gear on) is 250.

Since you need 173 to keep them on, 250-173 = 77 points.

So 200 - 77 = the amount of strength you need to have 173 strength with equipment on.

These aren't real numbers, just an example :D

Doesn't thr game automatically reset your stats to lvl1, and then give you the 250 unused points ? Apparently not, but i thought it's like that

What Elly is saying us correct. What you do is go to update screen and subtract the numbers from str then add to dex, THEN hit update. That will do the trick ;)

You may have done the old respec system. Now all you do is go to your stats and knock a few off here and and them somewhere else, and when you finish, hit ok and it'll ask you to spend a couple plat. WAAAAAY more simple. Same thing for skills if you want to respec. Rearranging the skill layout is still free.

This is making me want to bit the bullet and do a dex bear.

Do it! :)

If you don't like it, you could still be a str bear with the high dex anyway - which is still good :)
