Hello all,

I am sure you all have heard the commotion about the fancy MegaMage set, and how amazing it is supposed to perform (and having most of the set myself, I too can contest it performs great. I don't feel as squishy as if I were wearing full shadow, or even compared to certain orange and green lvl 55 items).

And I am also sure you have heard that the set is pretty costly. A million gold for ONE piece of the set for example. (Granted, this price WILL come down, but since it's new and exciting, it will remain high.) So I decided to construct a few builds that were comperable (not exactly the same) to the MM set. I am not an expert with Staffs so I did not include builds using a staff, but I might in the near future.

(These are ALL my opinions, I am not saying these sets are better than others guaranteed, simply that they are cost effective alternatives to MM)

*Please scroll to the right if images get cut off*

We will begin with our basis build, the Mega Mage Set:
Total Current Price: (50k+850k+800k+840k)=2.54 Mill

Great Armor, High M/S (perhaps unnecessarily high?), and Good Damage.

Now, these are my base stats with everything unequipped:

And with my Ring/Vanity:

The first set I will discuss is the 2nd most expensive out of the "Poor Man's Sets", but I feel it is the best performing when comparing to MM.

Set Includes:
Mega Mage's Gemstone Cowl, Lowman's Gemstone Wand, Sewer Queen's Gemstone Robes, Lowman's Gemstone Bracer
Total Current Price: (50k+5.5k+130k+1k)=186.5k

This set is great because; it shares the same Nightmare proc, has slightly higher base damage, and gives you over double the H/S than the MM does. (I know many mages think H/S is a waste of time, but being a player that leads the pack in many instances, I have found that this bit of H/S (having only 400 hp to begin with) really does help).

The bad thing is this set has 12 less armor and M/S than MM which is something to think about when preparing for combat.

Next we have build 2.

It consists of:
Mega Mage's Gemstone Cowl, Scrubber's Gemstone Wand, Sewer Queen's Gemstone Robes, Lowman's Gemstone Bracer
Total Current Price: (50k+20k+130k+1k)=201k

http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/914/build2.png

The good thing about this set are that it gives crit points which can lead to a much higher damage dealt with your weapon. Since the base damage is the same, your skill damage (firestorn, lightning, etc.) will still be the same amount as the first build. Also, it adds 4% hit.

The bad things about this set are (Compared to build 1) it gives 2 less armor, 6 less M/S, and 4 less H/S. And it is slightly more expensive.

Build 3:
Mega Mage's Gemstone Cowl, Lowman's Gemstone Wand, Adept's Gemstone Robes, Lowman's Gemstone Bracer
Total Current Price: (50k+5.5k+1k+1k)=57.5k

http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/1923/build3.png

Good things about this set include: The highest base damage of all the builds,(which also translates to skill damage. For example, with build 1 my firestorm skill reads 367-380, and with this build my firestorm skill reads 269-381 damage), and it has the highest H/S of all builds at 14 H/S. Plus it's super cheap!

It is comperable to build 2 in M/S at 20 points, and has 2 less armor than build 2 (4 less armor than build 1, and 16 less than MM).

And finally, build 4:
Mega Mage's Gemstone Cowl, Scrubber's Gemstone Wand, Adept's Gemstone Robes, Lowman's Gemstone Bracer
Total Current Price: (50k+20k+1k+1k)=72k

http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/6741/build4.png

This has the highest POTENTIAL damage (same base damage as build 3, but with crit, it can hit higher), and that's about it. Honestly, I would not really recommend this set due to the fact that it has far less armor, M/S, and, in some instances, H/S.

So, there you have it. A few of my select "common" drop builds, please feel free to ask questions or leave me feedback :)

Thanks, I'll be updating it shortly with more pics, staff information, and relevance to skill damage.
