Help! Confused about swamp & small groups...

I just played the first swamp lvl mostly by myself. My hubby played a bit of the lvl w me. I finished the lvl including killing the boss. I received TOTAL for the entire lvl, including boss drop, THREE items and all three were white. Hubby got TWO loot items: one white and one orange.

I don't mind that the loot is practically nonexistent, but I don't understand why. Other campaigns like LOST or FATHOM drop a normal amount. Is there a reason???

The swamp penalized me greatly for not playing in a big group. Is that supposed to happen?

If it is, could someone please tell me & explain why?
I'm clearly not understanding the swamp campaign correctly...

You tend to get better loot when in a group.

The difference isn't just a little better...
Why??????

Not to mention that the difference in alone/small group vs large group is NOT near that drastic in campaigns other than the swamp campaign...

Are swamps not supposed to be played alone? Why?
Being able to play alone or in a small group adds to the replay value of the game...
Doesn't it?
