I feel like I should know the answer already but here goes. When I play as a paladin, I've noticed in some recent PvP fights that I lose all my mana fairly quickly when I engage an opponent with my melee weapon. What spell and/or attack is happening to cause all my mana to be drained out? It's certainly not because I'm spamming attacks. Thanks for the insight.

Are you using mana shield?

Must be mana shield.
There are no attacks from birds or bears that drain mana directly, so your mana shield is doing it.
Mana shield is a "shield" around you which makes your mana take damage instead of health.
You can see it active when you have circular rings around your character.

Mana shield can be drained fairly quickly, depending on the opponent. If you are up against a bird, which for whatever reason has not taken out your mana shield (ex: they just fired their blast shot at something else), if they spam their other skills, they can wipe your mana shield out.
Assuming you still use that full fury set that you have, you are not depleting your mana by spamming attacks - its because you are sustaining damage. You are still better off with it on though in most cases - if attacks can deplete your mana shield like that, without it, you're looking at a fast death.

Thanks I did presume it was mana shield...I guess I was shocked by how much damage was getting dealt because of my mana bar getting instantly drained and then health not far behind.

It's pvp - a full volley can drain your mana shield in 1-2 seconds; less if the player is experienced. Scary isn't it? Gotta try to kill the target before you run out of mana or you'll be in serious trouble.
Fortunately, birds are even less durable than pallies. Most are probably wearing full raid roach with crossbow (due to 12m range). Dex mages can be expected to too - and they have even worse mana problems. Lol. I should pvp more when I have the time to.

#$%$ Oh my...
I feel so... lost. The description of the mana shield says that it buffs armor by 4 (and increases in levels from there).
It doesn't say it also redirects attacks from health to mana. Where is that documented?
(That would also explain why it's important to hit the keeper fast and hard before the mana shield goes up. Most people don't get that and take their bloody time knocking the keeper all over the room, but now I know why it's so important to be fast.)
Crickey... and I was just thinking to myself how it seems like half the bear's skills have hidden effects...

I personally love the magic shield and I specifically spec'ed it high because as an enchantress, my mana respawn is ridiculously high, so it allows me to skimp on the Str points and instead put them towards high Dex....

Lol - that is exactly what it does. Ever find yourself out of mana when your mana shield is taking sustained bombardment and unable to cast spells without a mana pot?
You have I think 60 seconds (it may have changed with a patch) to kill the keeper before the shields go up. The keeper's shield is basically a mana shield with unlimited mana. And unlike in pvp, it can't be brought down with blast shot (only overlord's can). If the shield goes up, you have to wait for it to drop. Auto only and save your spells for maximum burst damage when the shield drops. It is what separates PUGs from good teams. Good teams won't let the shield go up to begin with.
