Bots roam the web, find email addresses, and spam them. Phys has a really good explanation of it.

Yes, but STS wouldn't get that virus until they opened the email, and either downloaded & ran the attachments or displayed the images(some viruses are in images). Guessing they wouldn't do either as their just a support email.
