I'm very new so please be gentle lol I'd played archer in pl for the long range combat and being able to stay out of attacking range as all good ranged players should do. However I've selected the SL version the operator but I don't see the point, everyone including the bad guys have long range weapons so theres no way to get out of the line of fire.... Or am I being dense?

Well i havent played SL yet so i guess operative is the equivilent of archer and if thats true then even in PL the enimies have some long range wepons. You need to go into a level with some commandos (i think they are the "warriors" of the game) becuz they attract the attention of the enemies.

Play with commandos. You will hardly get hit.

I use more stims on my commando then my operative. Operative kills so quickly.

Do Commandos automatically attract all the aggro? That'd be kind of funny -- like a human shield.

Star Legends is really meant to be played with a group. That said, I think Operatives are possibly the best soloers. Their damage is amazing and they get a great health/mana regen ability. I also have noticed that I used far more stims on my commando despite his higher armor. I have not played extensively with an Engineer yet but I can tell you for sure that I love playing with one on my team because then I never need health stims.

Commandos can take more hits, but they also get AoE knockdowns that prevent enemies from attacking. With proper strategy, an engineer can keep the team up easily, the Commando takes most the damage, and the Operative does the most damage. Everyone does a good amount of damage, but whenever I am in a balanced group I can really tell the difference.

"Im gonna for a walk"
"Ok. stay close. I like my meat shields within bullet blocking distance. "

And no they dont. Certain skills have an aggro attract thingy...
