Hey guys.
This kind of topic has already been made about pl trailer music, you know, the infamous ha-ha-ha-ha-ha thing. So i was hoping the devs would look into that and probably do something about it. Seriously guys, how are you trying to attract people to your AWESOME games when you have awful trailer music accompanying the gameplay footage? Many people go on youtube and look at video game trailers. So imagine if someone stumbles upon PL or SL and will watch your awful trailers?
A good game needs to have a good trailer that has the kind of music that will attract people, it can not be something that specific people like, i mean u can't put a metallica song into a pl trailer. But the music that you have put into sl and pl trailers is absolutely awful. I mean, everyone can agree that it doesn't get anyone excited about the game, because it is not EPIC.
Here is the link to SL trailer, watch it and listen to the music guys - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmNiH8wohrI
Horrible right?
Now mute the sl trailer and try to watch it with this score - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmNiH8wohrI (fast forward to 1:23 and click on sl trailer at 0:09)
Better don't you agree? Now that was an example of massive epic trailer music that can be easily licensed through the company.
I've noticed that sts guys are really into lame guitar songs accompanying the trailers. So how about making an effort in finding an epic guitar song? (to all of you heavy metal fans...pls don't say anything about inserting a Disturbed song or something, seriously).
So yeah this time try this song - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eJoQWrhCtk ( again, fast forward to 0:42 and click on muted sl trailer on 0:09)
Now tell me it doesn't make a good trailer?
Heheh :D
So yeah devs, i hope next time u make a trailer you will think well about your music choice.

Here is a very small list of some other epic songs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48WowXfyTsA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0JUzyWRLG8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDmmK8oxlTY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaYXgO_rmek
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyK_1LsMn9A
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6q1RbzqYrT8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpqyy4fQ5CA
There are millions of songs like that. Can even think about any.
If you'd like to listen on youtube, these are the best companies:
1 Two steps from hell
2 Audiomachine
3 Epic score
4 Immediate music
5 City of the fallen
6 X-ray dog
7 Brand x music
and dozens of others.

I wouldn't exactly call it a "marketing fail", if by the PL trailer you mean this : PL Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJp9WiOb-OM), the music is actually perfect, IMO. It's light and fun which is exactly what PL is, and when you eventually venture deep into the game, you realise that there's actually more to it and it gets quite deep.

Similarly, the SL trailer shows a more intense game, which I believe was intended. To be honest, I didn't hear much difference between the original trailer music vs your second suggestion, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eJoQWrhCtk. In fact the SL one might even be more intense.

I don't know if it's me, but when looking at trailers I watch the gameplay more than anything else. If I want to listen to good music, then well, I listen to music.

Maybe it's the difference in our taste of music too, heavy metal is nice but not crazy over it. I'm not too sure what you mean by "A good game needs to have a good trailer that has the kind of music that will attract people, it can not be something that specific people like", unless you know that the viewers and players like heavy metal more than the trailer music?

PS. On a side note, it would be nice if during trailers real in-game effects would be heard, eg Physiologic's sewer video runs. I've liked trailers where you can see and hear a bit of the game play, would especially work for PL in dungeons when combos and mega combos come up, IMO.

I don't wanna argue with you Elly, but for real, the music in sl and pl trailers is awful, i have no idea why u say they fit perfect. And about my "marketing fail" expression, i had no idea what else to call it, so yeah, who cares, you know what i meant anyway.

Not looking to argue either ;)

I say perfect for PL because, IMO, the music perfectly fits what PL is about, having fun with friends. It's been expressed by devs and others ever since that PL is made to be a casual game. In my impression, that means its light, fun, and worry-free. After all, the trailer should try to communicate what the game is about to excite the viewer right? Like you said, you can't put in a heavy metal song in a PL trailer :)

Don't take it the wrong way, I do agree to some extent. The audio aspect of the SL trailer can be better, but it's not the worst either :)

I get what you mean, "marketing fail" just sounds too strong, IMO :p After all, PL prides itself in over 4 million downloads, that's pretty good marketing if you ask me ;)

Oh yeah and about your comment on sl music vs second suggestion....are u nuts man? lol :p

Nah, like I said, it must be our different taste in music :)

They will, I'm pretty sure ;)

Out of curiosity, what kind of music would you put into the PL trailer?

There are links there in my first post. But probably this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SenbXX0Lkb4 starting at 2:04, well timed with cruel blasts, nature strikes and stomps. Or this maybe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyK_1LsMn9A starting at 0:31, timed with logos and combos as well.

Ahh, thought those were for the SL ones, misunderstood :)

I see what you mean, they sound really epic, reminds me of a good movie trailer, like a 300 movie trailer or such.

Yeah, that's what i was talking about, making a trailer epic by having epic music. :D

This is a mobile phone game bro, not Final Fantasy. We're not charging into battle by ourselves against 5000 heavily armed soldiers with a chip on our shoulder and nothing to lose. We're a very basic character shooting laser bullets are space pirates and little green aliens who make some weird noise when I run by them.

Point is, yeah that music is cool, I actually have a 4 hour playlist of xray dog and immediate music that I use to work out to, but the music has to suit the game. Intense graphics/footage should be met with intense music.

Look at how Pokemon is marketed. You would probably look at it and say it's silly and childish. It is, but it makes boatloads of money.

Hey Blindmaster,

Thank you very much for taking the time to voice your opinions. If I were in your shoes, I would undoubtedly feel the same way you do. As you can see from the other replies to the thread, the background music is certainly subjective. Everyone has what they like and don't. While you feel that the music doesn't suit our marketing objectives, some do. I don't know that we missed the mark that far - certainly for you we did, on that we can agree.

Also, if you are interested in some reciprocal advice, I might suggest that, if you want people to take you seriously, you may find more success by employing a bit more tact to your presentation. If you have the opportunity, I would suggest a quintessential essay on human nature and getting along with people - http://www.amazon.com/How-Win-Friends-Influence-People/dp/0671723650. It's a great read. I hope you consider it.

If you have other ideas, I'd love to hear them. Please feel free to send me a private message with your thoughts.

Respectfully yours,

Gamers are more attracted to graphics and visual accompaniments than a musical score...The musical score is more subliminal, if anything.

Edit:

I'll contribute more to this thread. I think STS should utilize this "epic musical score"

Correct!!!! If this was a STS film then music would be everything. Music creates emotion in what your watching. Try watching a horror movie with out sound. It will not be scary.

@Blindmaster
Also if you dont like STS music ingame, then why not plug your headphones in your ipod and play those "epic" songs while playing. Problem solved... k thx bye

Why in your opinion? You have not explained your personal preference. Except choose some other music and say that is your preference? Although cool topic, amigo.

IMO: STS music in all their trailers: ROCKS!

Explanation:

1. "ha-ha-ha": Makes the game come across as fun, light-hearted and about having a few laughs!

2. AO Djinn music: Very desert/arabic-esque with some neat electro tunes to add idea of fast pace/action.

3. Star Legends trailer: Steady, a bit of crescendo in the middle, jazzy and some electric notes ~ cool/presentation suits a futuristic cutting-edge type of setting.

Personally always thought STS show a lot of class in their presentation eg music/art/fonts et al... I hope there is tons of cool tunes in Star Legends to listen to. :)

Okay, just to make this clear I am not ripping on anyone in this thread or this book or anything else, but whenever I see a self help book I think of a quote from "School for Scoundrels"...

"How many of you have self-help books? Okay, that's your first problem. You can't help yourself, because your *self* sucks!"

Also, Star Legends music reminds me of Phantasy Star games. That's a good thing.
